Welcome to your DP for life: A snapshot of the present moment!

“It is in the kind of meaninglessness that we get the profoundest meaning.”

Alan Watts

I love taking pictures. Sometimes I get into arguments with my wife about that. Whenever there is an event with my in-laws, her mother expects me to take pictures. And sometimes, I am that guy that prefers to avoid being told what to do.

Yes, I have become the DP of my family-in-law:

“The cinematographer or director of photography (sometimes shortened to DP or DOP) is the person responsible for the photographing or recording of a film, television production, music video or other live action piece.”

Cinematographer. (2023, February 12). In Wikipedia

There are two reasons why I don’t like to be the DP by default in my private life.

First, I am not living in the moment. Instead, I switch between taking pictures, editing them, and creating an album to share in my Google Photos app.

Second, I am always out of all the pictures. I will take selfies with my kids to be part of the picture. But taking selfies is not my cup of tea. Nobody is asking me to take a photo to be part of the event.

From that perspective, being a DP sucks for me. Yet I am always eager to take a snapshot of my kids. Indeed as things are moving fast, I want to capture some moments as they grow. We just came back from the park. And yes, I have spent most of the time photographing them.

I can’t help it. I am addicted to taking pictures. I love being the DP of my children. Yet sometimes, I feel like I am not fully present with them.

Did I tell you how I met their mother?

In 2005, I was a fool on Facebook. I am waiting for Friday and Saturday evenings. I look at all the events around me.

Yes, I have been addicted to dancing for quite some time. I started with Rock n’ Roll classes while in Engineering school. Salsa got me hooked. Then I moved to Bachata, and all the Latina couples danced.

In 2009 I discovered Kizomba. And That was it. Long story short, that is how I met their mother. I don’t want to drag that story over nine seasons like the original TV series, How I met your mother

And dancing is one side of the real DP of my life. And with the second inherent part of dance, I hope it will also be your DP:

1. D as Dance,

2. P as Partition.

I invite you to join me in this partition that makes me dance.

D AS DANCE - We all danced at some point. Remember when you were a kid, you would dance like nobody was watching. You will be dancing in one single room. Yet you will travel to many places in the universe of your mind.

That is the magic of dance. Pick up your best song. And you will dance to it until the end. While dancing, you will find joy and pleasure in the act itself. You are not thinking about the previous song or the one after. You are present at the moment and just dance, like Mick Jagger.

When I am dancing, I am just enjoying the music. Looking more closely, that is the only moment in my life where I don't think. Thinking is like talking to myself. When I dance, I silence my monkey mind and listen to life's music.

Dancing is the way to listen to the universe. So often, we are taught to speak up. But when you do so, you just repeat what you already know. You need to learn to listen up also. Unfortunately, we have lost that ability to listen up. And in that loss, we were deprived of the ability to listen to the present moment.

Imagine that you are stuck on an island. And you have to listen to the same song for eternity.

What song will you choose and why?

P AS PARTITION - When we listen to music, we enjoy the partition's energy. Each member of the band contributes to the overall harmony of the orchestra. Each instrument has its melody.

Yet when everything comes together, the sound of that melody brings tears of harmony to our hearts. We close our eyes. We are just there. We are moving while sitting in the same chair in that concert hall.

When we attend concerts, we pay for an experience. We get our full minds into the present moment. We enjoy each note as if it is our last. We have a hell of a ride in the present moment.

We play music together. We do it to create vibrations and frequencies that resonate with each cord of our souls.

Imagine that you will play in one band for the rest of your life.

Which partition will you choose and why?

Dancing to music is the best way to enjoy the present moment. That is the only DP that matters.

We can take three life lessons from dancing and the partition of the universe. Dancing and music answer the three most asked questions.

What is the purpose of life?

No other purpose than living in the present moment. Just dance!

What is the meaning of life?

No other meaning than being present in the moment. Just dance!

What is the sense of life?

There is no other sense than sensing the present moment. Just dance!

A DP captures snapshots of movies on set. Those will make it to the film poster for eternity. Use the partition of the present moment to dance to the universe's music.

There is no past. There is no future. There is only the eternal now. The note you will not hear will fade away. The music you try to analyze, you just have to listen to and enjoy the music you want to analyze. The universe is singing. You better close your mouth and open your ears.

In the end, your life is just that fickle note in the music of the universe. You will fade away in the blink of an aye. Presence is your power.

Be your DP in the movie of your life.

Just dance! Now!
